About Composting

Green and food waste is delivered to our site at Lower House Farm, by local authorities, industry or independent parties. The in-vessel composting (IVC) process mixes organic material, including food waste, under strictly controlled environmental conditions within a sealed and fully enclosed purpose-built bunker.

The waste is filtered, shredded and formed into windrows (piles) which are regularly turned for a period of 8-12 weeks to improve porosity and oxygen content and to redistribute moisture pockets. Its left to decompose under regulated temperature conditions. During this period the green matter will reach temperatures of over 60°C ensuring complete breakdown and sterilisation.

The organic material passes through a robust custom-built screening process to remove any further stones, plastic and other unwanted items to create a fine British standard Pas100 certified compost.

Soil Quality

Pas100 is the industry standard certification for compost, created by The British Composting Association – it ensures that your compost has gone through the correct quality procedures and is safe for you to use on your garden.

Pas100 soil improver is a natural, slow-release nutrient rich compost to assist with soil structure, moisture retention and to optimise plant growth. A full nutritional analysis report of our soil improver compost is available upon request.
